| | | solar prom A large solar prominence seen in profile this morning on the approaching east limb of the sun probably over a new sunspot group currently hidden from view to appear in a few days - taken with handheld cam to Coronado PST scope. I've added via PaintShopPro the Earth to scale - small isn't it!
The PST is of similar size to the Aldi Optus spotting scope but views the sun in hydrogen-alpha [red] light via special inbuilt filters.

| | | Re: solar prom What happens with these ejections once they detach from the suns surface? I take it that's what happened with this one?

CMEs are only detected via space satellites in far ultraviolet/x-ray region - the proms as recorded are local solar events that follow magnetic field loops and fall back onto the suns's surface and very few escape into space. Checkout Youtube for prom speeded-up showing their looped motion
