| | | 3rd nova in a row Amateur astronomers have been kept busy of late with three new stars [novae] discovered by Japanese amateurs in the last few weeks. Here's my pic from early this morning of the latest eg Nova Eridani just right of Rigel [bright lower right star in Orion]. It's quite unusual to find a nova in this part of the sky.
Pic taken with my piggybacked camera and superimposed is the spectrum of the star itself taken with my main 30cm telescope with a grating in front of camera to spread out its light into a rainbow [sorry no colour!] at the bottom and a trace [wiggly line!] above. I've marked hydrogen lines alpha and beta which are very characteristic of a nova eg effective a spectrum is needed to confirm a nova - but mine is not the first on this one but pleasing all the same.
My earlier post "little backyard science" explans via a video what nova are. For those with standard charts the nova is located at RA 04:47:54.21, Dec -10:10:43.1
and binoculars should find it.
