Re: January 2007 has two Full Moons!

A calendar blue moon yes

The moon has some wonderful Medieval names, as it occurs each month:

January: The Wolf Moon
February: The Storm Moon
March: The Chaste Moon
April: The Seed Moon
May: The Hare Moon
June: The Dyan Moon
July: The Mead Moon - Earth hart would like that one
August: The Corn Moon
September: The Barley Moon
October: The Blood Moon
November: The Snow Moon
December: The Oak Moon

The Moon Names site has others from around the world. Very beautiful names they are too.

Forgive me, I digress... back to the Blue Moon

Blue Moon Facts - On Average:

* Blue Moons occur once every 2.7 years.
* 7 times every 19 years.
* Once every 33 months.
* 37 times every century.
* Once every 33 full moons.

(info from the site above)

They could be overjoyed at being able to have more than one harvest, therefore reducing the dependency on dried fish and winter cabbage. mmmm.

I did not realise they had such romantic names for the full moon,
Drat cannot get that silly jaffa-cake ad out of my mind

It was probably a very practical thing in those days, a way to determine where you were in the year but to us yeah, its wonderfully poetic isn't it?

And not that long ago either - I was at Hamsterly Forest in the late 80s, watching the RAC rally, when there was 8-10 inches of snow on the ground

Re: January 2007 has two Full Moons!

I remember snow in November... and even October... and it wasn't that long ago either.

I got all exited to read that January has two full moons... especially having been outside to look at the beautiful wolf moon tonight... but will have to wait until June for the blue moon... maybe my daughter will come to visit me then

What a fascinating thread, Flying Red Fox.
And many thanks for the moon site, Owl Light! Hugely helpful with some research I'm doing for a children's book!

It still does sometimes, even in the south. In fact I would say it is more common here now than it was in the 1990s. My birthday is in November so I tend to notice. Both 2003 and 2004 my diary reported snow on my birthday. Only a flurry in 2004, but there was quite a bit in 2003.
