| | | a little backyard science Over the last week I've been recording a 'new star' low down in the SW after dusk discovered by Japanese amateur astronomers in late October.
The 'star' is presumed to be a nova [or exploding star] but a nova is only confirmed when a spectrum of its light is obtained - I managed to take a spectrum with my telescope two nights ago and yes the nova is confirmed by characteristic bright lines of hydrogen shown in my video clip YouTube - amateur confirms a nova
I've yet to find another such confirmatory spectrum but I'm sure they're around
Feel free to quiz me on this one! |

| | | Re: a little backyard science Thanks everyone for your interest
Last night I got a shot of the second nova discovered by Japanese amateurs in the past month - this one a little higher in the sky but still low in the SW after dusk as shown in chart below.
The spectrum, as before, uses a 'grating' in front of the camera to split the nova's light into as streak or spectrum with brightish hygrogen line in 'emission' as marked - characteristic of a 'new' star or nova.
Below it is a reference star eg Altair with the its 'lines' marked. The separation of the H-alpha line from each star's image [to right] is identical
