| | | Re: Big or little Dipper It is actually wildherbalian85's photo - I was just trying to be helpful in isolating part of the image and putting cats among pigeons - sorry. Am still wondering about this - i looked thru charts to see if I could see any clues. I hope the random pixels havent produced something along the lines of Jesus appearing on a pizza So what did you see when you took the photo
wildherbalian85?

wildherbalian85? | Whoops! - sorry loripo
That'll teach me to check back more carefully in future - LOL

They come from a screenshot of Cartes du Ciel (Sky-mapping software), which I superimposed onto loripo's original, in order to show that the stars in his pic aren't the Little Dipper (I also prefer 'Ursa Minor', or even the 'Little Bear')
The RED stars in that pic, are from loripo's original, and as you can see, they don't match up with Ursa Minor - nor do any of the other stars in that field.
I would be very interested if WHIan can give any more details though - such as a rough estimate of how high into the sky the camera was pointed, whether any zoom was used, or if it was a wide-angle shot - any clues at all as to the direction and scale - then I may be able to match it up with a sky chart, and possibly track down what stars they are in the original photo. |
I took a series of random shots at various zooms, the camera was just left on its back at a very slight slant.... don't ask which of the photos where taken at which angle.
Now the photo was taken using the built in Night landscape photography thing. Basically the darker it is the longer it take to take a photo... this is however pretty impressive because it takes in far more light then the eye can see.
The camera is a only a 10x zoom and is a 10 mega pixel... Kodak |

| | | Re: Big or little Dipper Hope you can't spot the constellations in this pic? It's a 30sec pic of nothing eg with the cap on the camera and records the defects eg hot pixels. These actifacts are superimposed on all my pics of 30 sec exposure via my astrocam but subtracted automatically so they don't appear in the finished pic.
I not suggesting all the stars on Wildherbalian85 pic are artifacts but maybe some of them which are distorting the constellations recorded. It would still be helpful in future if notes are taken to accompany star pics that need identifying such as date/ time/ sky direction/ camera setting etc. Just a thought

| | | Re: Big or little Dipper Good point & very interesting. I didn't know about that.
How long must the exposure be before the rotation of the earth causes the stars to begin leaving a trail (assuming equipment to prevent this was not being used). All the stars in the original photo seem to be still points of light with no tails?

You take a series of 30 second exposures then merge them into one. Even the individual 30 second exposures showed slight smearing of the stars.
You can see some examples of the finished images in this thread: Photographing star trails

| | | Re: Big or little Dipper They are good pictures Dave, I'm assuming the circular one is aimed near the Pole Star showing the Earths rotation very well?
I was just wondering if the original posters camera shutter had actually been open bearing in mind it was an automatic setting? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
