| | | Meteor impacts on the Moon I was looking at the Moon last night as it was possible to see quite a lot of detail even from here in London. Does anyone ever see/record objects hitting the Moon's surface. It obviously suffered a huge amount at some time and there's no atmosphere to burn things up, but I've never heard of anyone actually witnessing such an event.

| | | Re: Meteor impacts on the Moon I managed this one...
I like the effect of the craters at the edge of the shadow - but it puts me in mind of the Clangers and the Soup Dragon

| | | Re: Meteor impacts on the Moon I see quite a few people have viewed this thread and probably expected to see something spectacular so I apologise - I should have put a question mark at the end to explain that I was asking if any had been seen

| | | Re: Meteor impacts on the Moon The moon was visible at 11am this morning so I took a snap handheld with the bigma, didn't see anything hit it though
Cheated a bit in PP to make it a bit more visible |

| | | Re: Meteor impacts on the Moon Great view of the surface detail and you can see some in the shadow as well. Whatever PP you did it makes a great image

| | | Re: Meteor impacts on the Moon If been doing some more checking on this and NASA have recorded an impact - not spectacular but its there. NASA - A Meteoroid Hits the Moon
Other info I read suggests that a lunar exclipse might be the best time to see such strikes.

| | | Re: Meteor impacts on the Moon Artificial 'meteorite' eg spacecraft LCross due to hit moon [flash for 5s to maybe 60s] on 7:30 a.m. EDT [USA time!] on Oct. 9, 2009 as LCROSS to Crash into Cabeus A Crater on Moon | Parabolic Arc
Using the crash to stir up maybe ice/water vapour detectable via powerful spectroscopes on big telescopes but for us - Get the bins out

| | | Re: Meteor impacts on the Moon I make that 11:30 am, BST, so it'll be full daylight here. Might see something though if it's not cloudy.
