Moon occults planet Venus Dec 1

The young crescent moon will pass-in-front-of [occult] planet Venus in a rare event next Monday afternoon Dec 1st

From London it dissapears behind the dark [hidden] limb of the moon at 1547UT/GMT at sunset and reappears at 1716UT/GMT - times vary slightly throughout UK.

As it starts at sunset the sky will be quite bright but a pair of binoculars will show this rare event - look low down on the SSW horizon at an altitude of only 14 degrees - it's best seen from an elevated location for a clear horizon. You should pick-up Venus as a bright star just left of the moon with maybe planet Jupiter just above - see simulation below.



90 minutes later in dusk Venus pops back into view from behind the moon now very low in the SW at 9 degrees altitude.

Oh no, I missed it! I was watching and then it clouded over . My fella text me to say he saw it up in Scotland! So annoyed. I hope nytecam has some pics for us...

I saw this absolutely clearly tonight (Worcester) but had no idea it was occurring. I came here tonight to see if anybody knew anything about it, incredible spectacle.

I was watching it from my kitchen window and then 30 mins to the emergence it cloudied over!!!!!
So I watched it on the telescope link above,it looked amazing as Venus emerged from behind the moon......thanks for that Nytecam!
