| | | planet Eris far,far away Been pushing my telescope to the limit by recording dwarf planet Eris - the remotest body in the solar system in this 15 min exposure.
Eris [disc 2003] is larger than Pluto [disc 1930] but twice as far away eg 100-times further from the sun than earth so it's very cold out there!
The picture is shown as a negative for clarity with a comparison shot of the same region of the sky Eris currently occupies taken at Mt Palomar in the States before discovery. Eris is a tiny faint dot moving extremely slowly against the background stars and takes 560yrs to orbit the sun
Eris, in Greek mythology, was a spiteful godess who caused wars With so many new dwarf planets in the outer solar system astrologers must be confused

| | | Re: planet Eris far,far away That's very interesting - I've learnt something new today. That is such a small "dot". I don't know how you managed to find it |

I don't know how you managed to find it | Hi HW - I Googled JPL-Horizon website that precisely computes planet positions in real-time but then you have to aim your scope at a tiny region of sky and track accurately ['cos the earth rotates!], in this case for 15 minutes of the exposure.
Did a 2nd pic last night but slightly out of focus [blurred] so not much use to see if Eris had 'moved'. but will try again.
As a result of posting my pic on another forum got news that French amateur astronomers had recently recorded Eris and my picture matches perfectly with theirs showing Eris' regular but slow motion against the stars |

| | | Re: planet Eris far,far away great job Nytecam. I didn't even know this planet existed. Is it part of the Kuiper Belt or further out in the Oort Cloud? |

Regards
Mike.
