Red Moon

Look out the window! Can you see a really red moon? It's a half moon tonight and low in the sky at the moment, but really red/orange.

Re: Red Moon

I have asked all the trees to some ent steps back for me, so I can take a look, but their not budging for me! The stars are very still tonight, does this mean with the moon being red, unusually warm weather on it's way?!?

Re: Red Moon

Not fair, I've just ran to window all excited, but it's too muggy to see the moon I'd have loved to have seen it

Re: Red Moon

Hi Stuart
I have just been out the garden, looked out every window in the house and although clear sky and stars I cant even see the moon it must be so low! I have a wood round the house so it must be very low tonight and below the trees.
I watched the sun set from the 5th floor of the hospital this evening with Rob T (he has another op tomorrow) and it was spectacular colours.

Not seen it, but it'll be the shorter, blue'er wavelengths of light being filtered out by the light rays entering the atmosphere at an oblique angle, and hence following a longer light path. The longer red end of the spectrum is less affected.

Sorry if this dispels the romance, in the same way as Newton unwove Keats' rainbow!

Re: Red Moon

Just nipped out for a look. Very beautiful, although not red anymore. There's a hint of mist here which is softening it a bit and giving it a halo.

Not for me Jim! knowing why it happens just adds to the fascination and beauty for me.

Re: Red Moon

Actually its 100% true
this has been happening for several nights down here - the moon rises red but after about 9pm it goes back to being silver and small. isn't this also something to do with dust in the atmosphere. It certainly doesn't happen every month. Thursday's red moon coincided nicely with the start of the rut - the red mist...

I took a quick shot on a digicam on Saturday night - I've never yet managed to get a shot of the moon that looks like the moon - this is actually better than some of the weird squiggles that usually come out. (Any suggestions of how to get round this welcomed. The same applies to the handheld camcorder.) This is looking towards the London - the Henry VIII view

And a stonking red sunset that night too... dust in the atmosphere? I hope you can tell it's not the same view!

Last night (Sunday) it was a bit wishy-washy yellow. The sunset wasn't so good either.

Re: Red Moon

I missed this post some how. I was out on a bat walk last Friday, 19 Sep, and several of us commented how orange the moon was.

The moon's no longer red here but it did look pretty special tonight partly hidden in cloud

The photo doesn't really do it justice given my camera ability
