Gardening by the Moon

Hi

Does anyone attend to their gardens in accordance to the cycle of the moon? I have been looking a little at this and planting on a full moon is supposedly meant to be most beneficial as water rises at it's highest point in the earth, at these times?!? Makes sense!

So I'm wandering if there was any kind wabber who may know more about this and wouldn't mind putting up the dates of the full moons for the year/ or point me out to more information!

Your help will be kindly appreciated, thank you- Jez

If it recommends you plant on the full moon then why plant before. Don't this defeat the object

I can't think why it shouldn't more advantages by giving it a couple of days before the full moon?! A little bit of wax before the wain! Maybe, I'll try both one plant a couple of days before and one on the day and see if theres any difference in the growth!

I don't understand any of this. But heard it was a beneficial way to garden..It a good idea to do an experiment and compare the differences.

Re: Gardening by the Moon

About a year or two ago the Gardening Which magazine ran some trials on this old idea and, surprise surprise, they found no difference. The only thing that really mattered was soil temperture.

Hi Jez,

There's not much in it but new moon tides are a little bit higher than full moon tides. Both the Sun and Moon produce two tides each day with the one on the same side of the Earth as the Sun or Moon being the higher high tide of the two. At new Moon the Sun and Moon are both on the same side of the planet and their highest high tides combine, whereas at full Moon the Sun and Moon are on opposite sides of the planet so the Sun's highest high tide combines with the Moon's lower high tide and vice-versa.

Anyway, an interesting experiment - please let us know how you get on.

Dave P.

Re: Gardening by the Moon

It was the only way those in ancient times knew when it was time to plant they watched for signs and thats why they used the moon and the zodiac phases. They constantly watched nature and what was happening it was the only calendar and clock they owned..

Re: Gardening by the Moon

I read somewhere that if you do your gardening at night you will have a lot less weeds!
