| | Stopping floodlights in rural village...please help! I live in a small rural village outside Warwick, called Claverdon. We have no street lights, excellent for amateur astromoners like my father and for anyone wanting to stargaze like myself (rather rare in the Midlands it seems). However, there are plans afoot for the local tennis court to erect 6.7meter tall floodlights. Help us in our campaign to stop this!
....light pollution is a major concern.....
....the area is a conservation area....
....the tennis courts are grossly underused in the daytime anyway........
....owls and bats maybe disturbed.....
....the lighting posts themselves will be an eyesore for anyone visiting the village and will inflict upon the scenery....
To me this is highly alarming so any advice/ help would be extremely helpful in our campaign..... |

As most people have to work during the daytime, the courts wouldn't be used much.
"the tennis courts are grossly underused in the daytime anyway."
Perhaps thats why they want floodlights .
Max.

| | | Re: Stopping floodlights in rural village...please help! Check out the 'Campaign for Dark Skies' website.... CfDS - The Campaign for Dark Skies. An Anti Light Pollution Organisation.
Lots of advice there - in their 'Campaigning' section they give practical advice on what you can do about it, who to write to, etc.....
Also many links around the site, to other bits of info and advice.
Good luck - hope you get them stopped - streetlights are the bane of my life

| | | Re: Stopping floodlights in rural village...please help! I agree, street lights are a pain, we are so lucky living half way up a hillside with no street lights. Mind you some of the neighbours have installed 500w security lights but at least they are on sensors so they are not there all the time. Apart from spoiling our views of the night sky, they are not good for glow worms either as the males are attracted to any light and when it's a bright source they could miss the females.
