Hi scavenger, welcom to the forum. The birds maybe sensed bad weather then found a good food source somewhere else. Some locations are like this especially in winter when the birds flock together more. Then again you just may have been unlucky and they've been visiting when you've been out. A bird of prey moving into the area can also upset things.
