spot on - according to what stu told me the reason behind this was that the attachments folder for the forum was getting very large and taking up room on the server / slowing the back up process
for technical reasons having images in the gallery does not cause the same problem.
however the missing thumbnails should manifest as an empty outline box - where you get the little white box and red cross this is either a broken / incorrect link to another site or a link to the gallery where the picture has been deleted.
