The problem with petitions is that they ony "count" as one vote. As far as planning departments and Councils go (at least ours anyway), a petition no matter how many signatures there are, is only seen as one response to an application.
Another problem is catching the planning application. By the time they get to the local paper its to late, our council post online weekly, but there is a catch - if its an outline application the decision has already been made and these are more often agreed in the end anyway. An element of second guessing the planning process comes into play, this is why we are trying to keep our "problem" in the news -

It is better therefore, for each person to write and register their objection. We are looking into having hundreds (thousands) of letters copied and getting each repondent to fill in their name, address and siganture and we will then send these to the Council. Paper, envelopes, labels and printing is now cheap with personal computers and online suppliers.
But, I will look into an online setup as the wider communities help is another string to our bow. Many thanks for your help.
