In English 's' has two sounds, soft 'z' and hard 'ss'. Lens rhymes with fens (soft s); put an 'e' on the end and it rhymes with sense (hard s).

Ah, but then I give you the word "flense" (not in frequent use in general conversation, admittedly), which is the exception to your rule, being pronounced "flenz". Means to strip blubber or skin off an animal
