My husband was wearing a pair of boots which he had bought about 8 years ago - costing a fortune at the time, and made by a very good company. He has rarely worn the boots since buying them but the weather today was frosty.
As I looked at his booted feet, the sole at the front looked as if he had trodden in muck, but as he progressed on his way it became apparent that the sole and heal section of the boots was coming adrift in bits. Same on each boot. As you may imagine walking was a bit difficult for him, as he didn't know from one moment to the next how much sole existed between him and the ground, or where a lump would break off, with each step. By the time we returned home there was hardly any sole left on either foot and his socks were beginning to feel decidedly damp.
The uppers of the boots are almost 'as new' having been polished and taken care of. So what has caused this degredation of the sole?
It was one of those times when try as you might, you cannot help but see the funny side of things!
