For a good read, rather than some of excellent field guides that have come out this year, what about 1 of the New Naturalists volumes that have recently appeared on Gower, Bumblebees or Woodlands- good stuff to share the sofa with.
A real cheapie- the new FSC laminated Ladybird ID chart.
