I'd just burnt the roast pumpkin wedges, so the house was full of smoke and my guard was down when the door-bell rang. We all scurried around looking for the key to unlock the door, as they'd rung the side door bell which we keep locked. When we opened the door, three quite large, maybe teenage figures stood there, dressed suitably scarily. "Ooh!" I said, genuinely startled. "Sorry," said one of them. "Good evening. Trick or treat. Raaagh!" (all spoken very politely including the roar.)
"Oh, hang on, I'll find you some change," I said, charmed by the politeness, and disappeared into the smoke, shouting as I went, "sorry, it's a big house!" "It's a very nice house," said one of the ghouls politely. My partner appeared, and gave them some change. "Oh, thank you very much," they chorused. "Goodnight!" and left, down the side path, remembering to shut the gate! |
