Hello Paul !
We're actually about 70 kms east of Budapest, whereas Lake Balaton is about the same distance west of Budapest.
Balaton is bit too touristy for my liking - as Hungary lost it's sea coast in the "great rip-off" of 1920 (when the country lost 2/3 of its territory and population), Hungarians tend to use this area as their frollicking place.
To the south-west of the big lake is Kis Balaton (Little Balaton), and this is a prime area for birds. But......there's more than enough to see in our "neck of the forests".
