Before accepting any wild animal as dead - or large domestic stock - check for an eye reflex by touching the eyeball - preferably with a bit of stick or something sufficiently long to keep your fingers away from the sharp bits if applicable.

Hi Mac, I do know what you mean, not sure if it was a Roe or Fallow deer, it wouldn't have been Red in that location, and the deer was a bit dazed so was in no fit state to panic and thrash around, unlike one i had to help remove sometime ago from a 12 ft. deep pit with 18 inches of water in the bottom, i got kicked, my watch smashed, bruises all up my arms/legs etc, and this was a Fallow fawn, once he was lifted out, he just shook himself, looked at us and legged it into the distance, that's gratitude for you.
