I use a 17-55mm all the time, it's my 'everyday lens'. The 17mm end is just about OK for landscapes, though a wider angle is obviously better for some scenes. I like the results it gives and the lack of distortion is a real plus point, making it worth the money to me. It is quite a big and heavy lens for its range though.
I find it especially useful as a good wide to mid range lens for travelling.
