Mack, if you can't find flint you can always use glass (heavy green wine bottles work well - especially the base which is generally thicker, as long as its flat.)

It's easily available and you wont feel to bad if you mess it up

In the local museum (Malton, N Yorks) there is a section about a bloke who found loads of worked flints, then started to make his own, and the final exhibit is a beautiful tanged and barbed arrow head, made from blue glass.

It is a very good area for flints, I have found 8 in the last 5 years, you get an eye for it. Flat facets and so on catch the eye.
