Thanks - it may well be the Nuctenea umbratica but it has disappeared now so I can't have a closer look.
I'm not too fond of spiders but I'm not a screamer. Looking at the close up photos and this particular spider has roused some really sicky feelings. I must say I prefer 2 and four legs to 6 / 8 legs!! Thanks for your replies.
