It's more the flexibility the Bigma offers rather than the very slight difference at the top end. In fact, Sigma's 500mm looks to me just about the same as Canons 400mm! One curious point I've found is that whilst the Canon lens give a much sharper image straight out of the camera, my Bigma shots sharpen up better in software.
I haven't finally decided what I'm going to do, other than I'm going to be using the Bigma more over the next few weeks and see how I get on with it.
