Re: Richmond park deer rut 2009
Thanks Loripo - that was very useful.
I went yesterday and got there at 07:45. Unfortunately I went to the Robin Hood gate just off the A3 but this gate is closed to vehicles (the clue was in the word "pedestrian" which was clearly marked on the map for those with the sense to look!
) I managed to find another gate and parked in the Pembroke Lodge car park.
The place was heaving with ring-necked parakeets...
There are at least 23 in this picture...
I know some people find them a welcome dash of the exotic to the British countryside but in my opinion there's just too many of them. From the minute I arrived until I left just before 2pm, and wherever I went in the park there was a constant cacophony of their screeches.
I was much more impressed with the jackdaws - lovely birds and very busy foraging for ticks on the deer...
The deer were in fine voice, especially the reds, with lots of roaring and bellowing...
I had to clone another photographer out of the middle one of those images but I left him in this one...
Go on, have him! He's only a Canon user!
The fallow stags were doing their share of bellowing too...
And they provided the only physical contact of the day with these youngsters practicing their moves for when it's their turn in a few years...
Here's a few more pics of the red deer...
