Nikon D80 cable release

Just set up a feeding station for the kingfisher, set up camera and into the bag hide with my Nikon ML L3 Remote release. A few test shots went well. Any how an hour later he came to the perch and nabbed a minnow, just as it hit the water I pressed the remote... Never took a pic. It flew of with it's meal so I tried a few more tests, some worked some didn't. I was only 3 metres away and I've found that you have to be pretty accurate when pointing it at the sensor. No good to me and I'm gutted I missed a great oppurtunity. Has anyone got any experience with the cable release? I know it's pretty expensive (about £85 I think) but if it works everytime it be more than willing to pay. I'm sure I read somewhere it's quite tricky to set up, but I was wondering just how tricky. One last question, how long is the cable? Hope someone can help, thanks.
