Most household insurers cover personal items whilst away from home as an "add on" to the normal house contents policy. (Look at your existing policy, you will almost certainly see a section for such things - you never know, it might already have been taken up).

Generally speaking, insurers don't require single items to be specified unless they are individually worth more than £1000.00 (in some cases considerably more), so your kit should fall comfortably within the normal terms, if your parents take up that option on their policy.
