I've not seen anything from Nikon that suggests this. I use this lens/camera combination and get excellent results.
As does WhiskyBottle, I also have the 300mm f/2.8 VR Nikkor, and the f/4 version rivals the former for image quality. I would still like to see an example of the images you are getting from either lens. That way we can give a (possibly) more informed response.
