Re: Lens Advice

If you are restricted in where you are allowed to stand to take the photos, I would suggest a short range zoom would fit the bill better than a prime wide angle, as it would give you some control over composition.

However, as you are aware, Canon's own brand zoom, in your preferred price range will have a narrower maximum aperture than the f2.8 of their typical 28mm or 35mm wide angle lenses, and f4-5.6 or thereabouts, will be the order of the day.

Unless you are totally dedicated to Canon brand lenses, I'd suggest going down the independant route, and look at something like a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5EOS.

It would give you that extra stop of light when compared with the Canon 17-85mm. (and will cost slightly less too).

I was a dedicated Canon man for years, before switching to Nikon, but the lenses I use most of all are both Sigma's - a 180mm f3.5macro, and a 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 wide angle zoom. I love both of these lenses and they are every bit as good as any Nikon own brand lens.

Might be worth trying a couple of prospective lenses out at your local retailer before committing to a purchase.

Regards,
Mike.
