Well I have to agree. For a first photo with your new kit that is VERY good indeed. Call beginners luck if you want but what ever you call it, it is a good one. I echo a previous comment that you might be able to crop the picture with very little loss of quality. You chose a good lens as well, 70 - 400 should just about cover everything. Getting used to using a much heavier lens will take time but if you just go back to first principles and remember to control breathing and so on you wont be disappointed.
Dont forget to read your manual and try different modes on the camera to see what results you get. Dont get too technical though, that can spoil the natural results.

When I get a moment I am going to have a look at your work since. I'll bet it is all just as good if not better.
