That's precisely the question - is it an anamorphic state, or is it something else? I was browsing on a completely different topic and I came across references to Isaria umbrina as a parasite of Hypoxylon species. I then found a photo (see link above) which was remarkably similar to Mike's which seemed to be identiyfing the growth on and around the Hypoxylon as Isaria umbrina.

So is it or isn't it?
