It is quite possible that a passing bird or animal carried it to your pond. It also very commonly comes attached to water plants purchase at garden centres etc. It could have persisted for a while as tiny fragments which you didn't notice.
It would be worth removing all the bits you can see as once it get going it can increase very rapidly!

Is it possible that this came in on birds or even animals for that matter? It's weird that it seems to have suddenly appeared - not in huge lumps but only just become noticeable. Does it perhaps sit dormant and this time of year is ideal conditions?
