Your all right I think it might be a Hornbeam, this was my original thought. However what put me off this was because of this tree near by which I also thought was a hornbeam, as shown in the picture below, and although the leaves are very similar they have distinct differences. This leaf has shallower veins, darker colour, rougher surface and a darker colour. Is this a hornbeam as well?
