I went for the D300
because it had the 1.5 crop-factor. My Sigma (50-500) becomes a very useful 75-750mm at an
incredibly sensible price. It makes perfect sense, especially for
amateur wildlife photography.
No doubt Pro's would want an FX sensor and super ISO speeds but they can also probably afford (or justify) expensive long, fast lenses - which I can't.
£3000 will buy a very impressive and usable D300 kit or a pretty basic FX kit (and a great big wishlist).
