Re: Newtpoles

Newtpoles are a fascinating addition to my pond this year - I am still not sure whether their first appearance on hatching is legless, as I have read, but maybe these were the smaller tadpoles amongst the population of "frog taddies" of various sizes?? Anyone with a photo of a newly hatched newt without legs?
Apparently they leave the water at the end of July and are not as "faithful" as frogs in terms of which pond they return to to mate in spring - this last sort of statement strikes me as difficult to prove without doing some sort of marking experiment, but there are newt nerds as well as frog nerds!!.
