the only problem with a mesh cage is it still lets some larger bits through, the aquatic plant pots have a small mesh like perforation which filters out most of the large stuff, (in my case anyway) plus i had the pots going spare at the time
either method is worth a try if it prevents your pump from burning out due to blockages,
