Hello Steve, nature is not `nice` it is `red in tooth and claw`, nature is about self preservation and the passing on of genes. I think most of us that garden for birds etc. feel it when we find a dead bird, but we must bear in mind that when we create a habitat for birds we also create a habitat for predators. I personally do not have a cat problem, but I do have magpies jackdaws and the occasional visit from a sparrow hawk which recently took a collared dove. I do not interfere with the natural events that occur from time to time, I do not `protect` the birds in my garden, but I do provide them with food and lodging i.e. nest boxes. We should also bear in mind that the some small birds in our gardens are also predators on moths ,butterflies and dragonflies etc...Bob
