Sanitising bird baths

Just wondering what everyone else does.

This time of year, when I'm watering the garden in the evening, I give them a blast with the hose, tip them over and leave them to dry before refilling. When they begin to look green, I scrub them and use kitchen sanitiser (Dettox spray type) I'm fastidious about rinsing thoroughly, leaving to dry before re-rinsing and filling up. The birds don't seem to come to any harm. I have always done this, not knowing until recently that there's a product designed for cleaning bird tables etc. Call me mean but £5 per bottle is a rip off.

On a similar subject, I have always used Jeyes fluid to scrub down the bird table. If it's safe for chicken coups, it must be ok for birds.

Should I don my tin hat and duck my head?
