I spoke with a someone that recovers shopping trolleys for
the supermarkets,they said that there are people that
regularly take a trolley home laden with groceries up to
a mile away then abandon them(the trolley not the groceries)
local kids then play with them and the distance increases
until they end up (they like the splash)in a water course
