For Butterflies I use "Britain's Butterflies by David Tomlinson and Rob Still, it's part of the "Wild Guides" range. I like it because it has clearly labelled male and female forms and a section with pictures on eggs, caterpillars and chrysali.

For Moths I use the "Field Guide To The Moths of Great Britain and Ireland" by Waring, Townsend and Lewington. I also use the concise guide in the field.
