Can you identify?

Unfortunately no picture but in my garden this evening I saw a 'moth'/'butterfly'/'fly'? that was acting like a humming bird. It was about 3 cm long with a wing span of 4 cm. It had a furry grey back with a black and white checkered slightly bulbous rear end. It had a huge proboscis which it was inserting into flower centres. It was continually hovering, never landing on the flower and as I say, acting like a humming bird.
I have never seen one of these before and cannot find it in my (old) insect books.
I would be grateful if somebody could offer some suggestions as to what it was
Thanks
