I use a D60 with a 70-200 VR lens and it does take good pics most of the time, though the auto-focus on this lens is a bit hit and miss. The 18-55 lens is just as good but make sure you get the VR version. I take most of my shots using 'auto' unless they are static objects like plants and the results are sometimes pretty good, here's a couple of examples I am pleased with:
