| Re: British Summer 2009 Has anyone noticed a trend in recent years of early May bein g cool and wet. I remember a May Bank holiday in 1995 being down to 8c, about the norm for early April. At this time of writing here in Sussex the temperature yesterday was only 12c, but is predicted to rise to about 20c by Friday, just in time for the Spring Bank Holiday !
The cool period of early may is a risky one for yong birds leaving the nest, as food may be scarce, and their feathers are not yet fully waterproofed, so they can die of exposure.
All in all, May is like a woman in love, contrary and fickle sometimes, and then coming out with a big smile. May is very feminine month, no wonder the tradition of maypole dancing was so populor in rural areas. sadly nowadays , I dont know of any Maypole celebrations in this area. |
