Hmm. Not that I'm disagreeing with you Gill, but just to add a different perspective...
Back in the '80s, I worked on a dig at St Ninians Priory, Whithorn, Galloway. An otherwise idyllic location, it was constantly subjected to the roar of F111s as they used the Priory to line up for a run down to the bombing range at Luce Bay, near Stranraer. A few weeks later, they bombed Libya!
