It really is time someone invented a method to make cross-sections from photographs.
However, my vote is for roots I'm afraid. It cannot be
Bryoria fuscescens as that has 'isotonic' branching (effectively forking, rather than narrow side branches coming off a main axis, as is visible here). This doesn't rule out other
Bryoria or
Alectoria species, but none is very likely.
