They do cast a lot of shade. the soil is fairly poor. I understand form my neighbours it is mainly builders waste below 6 inches!

I would love to plant native trees but they would take a few years to grow. A fence with climbers is a good idea or just growing climbers up the existing trees. i will give it some thought.

I agree aethestically they are very dull and I would love to have more of a woodland feel.
