Well, I have tried out this combination of 30D, 100-400 and taped Canon 1.4 TC yesterday at home from the landing window and in the garden, this morning from the bedroom window and this afternoon on a yomp. In all cases, the pump was set to about 380. Except where indicated, the shots have been cropped.

I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised. I did try for good light and clear targets where possible because the taped AF is only a compromise and hunts unless very well treated.

This is just a lucky shot of starling a couple of gardens away just as it took off - the quality of the result can best be judged by the sharpness (or lack of it) of the tree foliage

This was taken from the garden at the top of a large ashtree

This is an uncropped shot of goldfinches on a feeder about 30 feet away untouched

Now cropped quite heavily, and standing up well

A flight attempt that came out not too badly - others fared less well

This is also uncropped and taken through the bedroom double glazing - cleaned last week, fortunately

This BHG was on a neighbour's roof about 45 feet away

This one, I took this pm. It is uncropped and has come out quite well as it was difficult to focus through the foliage - probably just as difficult without the TC

I followed this fieldfare down an orchard. Fortunately, it left the ground and alighted in a tree in a fairly exposed position - about 30 feet away

By now, the light had gone and I was in the process of shutting up shop. Suddenly, this redwing came on the scene. Here, it is just starting to fly. The result was the classic case of a black blob against the sky - pleased with the end product.

Perhaps my money was not wasted and I shall have to use the TC more often; especially on a tripod etc.

All in all, a useful exercise.

Colin
