Most of the smoke is carbon particles, I gather, so not desperately polluting. (Mucky but not poisonous) Someone suggested that it was less polluting to burn it this way than if it had been burnt in engines! (All those additives and detergents etc, and incomplete combustion, presumably).
Fire training tomorrow, when no doubt we'll see petrol set deliberately alight so we can try putting it out!
