On Friday 5th December at about 4:30pm, we were travelling along the M61 near Preston, just after dusk, when a bright blue flash lit up the entire sky. Everyone in the car exclaimed "What was that?". (Or words to that effect

).
It was as though someone had set off one of those industrial sized explosive fireworks, the whole sky went brighter than daylight.
There was only the one flash, it lasted for only a fraction of a second, and there was no noise.
The day had been overcast, but there were no thunder or lightning storms in our area either before or after the flash.
Everyone had their different opinions - Firework, Lightning, Electrical fault on the high voltage transmission lines... but none of these seemed to fully fit what had just been seen.
Nothing on the news that night, and googling on the internet just produces thousands of similar threads to this one, with no definitive answer - strange.
Regards
Mike.
