A quick tip that has always worked for me, try wrapping the spare in two or three sheets of kitchen towel then keep it inside a plastic money bag, after this pop it in your trouser pocket.
It will keep the battery dry,warm & safe from shorting plus its easy to get at even with frozen hands.
